What is Air Source Heat Pumps

How does ASHP work?
Air source heat pumps operate by taking the energy from the air outside and transferring it into water. This powers your central heating and hot water supply. It works in a similar way to a refrigerator but extracts heat from the outside air, even in the winter months, moving the air over a copper coil which contains a refrigerant.
The air contains heat which boils the refrigerant producing a vapour. It then passes through a heat exchanger and heats up the water. Finally, this is directed to either under floor heating coils, large radiators or your hot water cylinder.
The air source heat pump itself will need to be sited outside the property on a flat concrete base which will offer it stability. There should be no need for any external digging outside your property. It is important that the unit is sited somewhere where it will be subject to good airflow.

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is a government scheme designed to help homeowners in England and Wales afford the upfront costs of installing a heat pump.
The £450m policy provides homeowners with grants of £7,500 to have air source heat pumps installed. The scheme will now run until 2028.
